Hooliganism is not uncommon in soccer. But this wild incident in Dutch soccer was a concerning one. On Wednesday, a fan invaded the pitch during an Eredivisie game between FC Groningen and SC Heerenveen last month. The pitch invader threatened the stewards while they took him off the ground, and the judge ordered him to do community service while the league is contemplating banning the fan.

Now, one of the hooligans threw a lighter-like object at the celebrating opposing team players during the Dutch Cup semifinal. The lighter left the Ajax midfielder in blood as it hit the head of the player. It resulted in stopping the game for around 30 minutes. Social media users have reacted to the emerging video of the incident.

After the incident, the referee took the players into the dressing room. The match restarted after a delay of around 30 minutes. Ajax substituted Klaassen a few minutes after the restart as he complained of dizziness.

The former Premier League star said, “I had a throbbing feeling around the wound. I also had a trouble focusing, so I could have stayed on the pitch, but that was not going to help me nor the team,” after the game. “You don’t want to let it get to you, but sometimes you have to put your pride aside and do what’s best for the team.”
