Only those clubs that fit this salary cap will be roster-compliant and allowed to participate in the regular season without punishment. Friday, 8 pm, is the deadline for teams to achieve roster compliance. However, for Lionel Messi and Co. at Inter Miami, the deadline came early, as they started their season on Wednesday, unlike most clubs that start on Saturday. Though an MLS insider said Miami was ‘screwed‘ to achieve roster compliance, the Herons managed to fit within the salary cap with some timely moves.

That also seemed to be a last resort for clubs, even if it meant forcing a player out of their senior team. If Inter Miami made such moves, would their rivals be far behind? Per reports, Chicago Fire has also adhered to these regulations with strategic moves similar to Messi’s employers.

How did Chicago Fire achieve roster compliance ahead of the MLS deadline?

Aiming to free up allocation money and salary cap space, Chicago Fire once again granted a Designated Player status to midfielder Gaston Gimenez. DPs notably come outside a team’s salary cap. Besides fitting the roster within the cap, clubs must also ensure that their senior team comprises 20 players for roster compliance. Chicago had 23 players in their senior roster.
