It has been almost 8 months since Lionel Messi showcased his magic on the world stage during the FIFA World Cup, helping Argentina secure the prestigious trophy. After 36 years of longing, Messi’s remarkable performance not only led Argentina to victory but also earned him the FIFA Best Men’s Player Award and the Laureus Sportsman of the Year accolade. However, Messi’s magic didn’t just benefit him. His friend and ex-teammate Sergio Aguero also reaped the rewards.

Sergio Aguero won big thanks to Lionel Messi

Unfortunately, Aguero couldn’t participate in the World Cup due to his heart problems, a serious condition that eventually forced him into early retirement. Although he couldn’t take the field, Aguero passionately supported his nation and teammates throughout the tournament. From the sidelines, he cheered on the team and jubilantly celebrated with them on the pitch when they lifted the World Cup trophy.

Aside from his unwavering support, the Manchester City legend also engaged in some betting activity during the World Cup. One particular bet he placed was on Lionel Messi winning the Golden Ball, an award presented to the tournament’s best player. With 7 goals and 3 assists, Messi undoubtedly earned the accolade, fulfilling Aguero’s prediction.

Interestingly, Aguero had apparently forgotten about this bet until recently. In a recent Instagram story, he shared a picture of the bet, revealing that he had won around $8.2k. “On November 17, I placed this bet, and I’ve just realized it now,” he wrote in his story.

While Aguero may not have been able to contribute directly on the field, his gamble on Messi’s brilliance paid off handsomely. Nonetheless, it may have been disappointing for Aguero to miss out on the World Cup due to his health condition. Given how he recently admitted to wanting to play with his friend, Lionel Messi.
