Over the years, Cristiano Ronaldo has built an unmatched soccer empire. From winning collective and individual titles to setting unique milestones, the Portuguese superstar has etched his name in the history books. But it seems chasing this glory for himself has brought CR7 into the negative limelight, as former Brazilian superstar Filipe Luis claims that Ronaldo had selfish behavior during his time at Real Madrid.

Filipe Luis often faced Ronaldo while the defender was playing for Real Madrid’s derby rivals, Atletico Madrid. But let’s hear what Luis has to say about Ronaldo’s nature when in action.

Filipe Luis recently sat down for a tête-à-tête on the Charla Podcast. During the discussions, one of the co-hosts asked the Flamengo star about his clashes with Cristiano Ronaldo, given that Luis often used to talk about the Portuguese star’s direct rival, Lionel Messi.

This led Luis to shed light on an interesting incident that occurred during a Madrid derby. He said, “Cristiano was angrier first because he didn’t do anything in the game. He didn’t create a play. He only thought about himself. He’d take the ball and shoot from 30 meters and so on.”

Luis revealed that during the game, Ronaldo didn’t do anything before the second half. “He didn’t touch the ball. I don’t know what then, a corner, poof, goal with a header. Then it would give you that feeling, saying, ‘Well, the guy doesn’t do anything but the guy is very awesome, he’s cool, he’s awesome.'”

The former Atletico left-back then concluded by heaping praise on the 38-year-old. “He scores too many goals like that; for me, there’s no comparison between the two (Messi and Ronaldo). This guy is a machine (X2). He is a real animal.”

Certainly, Ronaldo would be happy to hear the praise, but he might raise eyebrows over the claims of being subtly called selfish. This isn’t the first time someone has claimed he played for himself.

Another time CR7 was slammed for being self-centered

Back in 2021, former Juventus midfielder Domenico Marocchino took a dig at Cristiano Ronaldo’s time in Turin, claiming that the striker plays for himself. While speaking to TMW Radio, he said, “Juventus does not have the classic striker. Ronaldo is not, he plays for himself not for the team.” Not everyone is clearly fond of Ronaldo’s mindset to play for himself.

One take at a time

I first kicked a soccer ball when I was 12. My early exposure to playing the sport earned me many accolades at the zonal and district levels. I still remember my first goal, where I scored a 90+5 minute header like Sergio Ramos did in the 2014 Champions League final against Atletico Madrid.
