If you look at the past years and name one player who faced the pressure for so long, it is Harry Maguire. The Manchester United defender has been the subject of criticism because of his performances for the Red Devils. But at times, it goes up a level notch. Fans took to social media to slate him after his latest own goal against Scotland. Although England won the game 3-1, Maguire’s own goal put the pressure on the Three Lions.

Therefore, fans were unhappy and voiced their opinions. But people are rooting for Maguire even at these trepid times. Maguire’s mother defended her son and stated the personal attacks “Harry receives have gone far beyond football.” Sharing her sentiment, actor Tom Holland, an ardent soccer fan, empathized with her son’s judgments.

Appearing at the BMW PGA Championship Pro-Am event, Holland spoke candidly about the pressure faced by Maguire. Tom Holland stated in the interview“Look, I think being a professional athlete is incredibly tough. You’re under pressure every time you step onto the field. I admire the fact that he steps on there no matter what people are saying. He tries his best.” Holland appreciated the skill set of the Manchester United defender and discussed how great he was. Moreover, he understood the player’s loyalty to England over the years.

As his foot led to his own goal, Holland believes Maguire did the right thing against Scotland. He continued, “So you know those things happen in football. I really admire Harry,” although Tom has never met him. Maguire arrived at Manchester United in 2019 from Leicester City and became a mainstay in the heart of the defense. However, several high-profile mistakes turned his career upside down as he became the scapegoat for United’s fragilities. Most fans blamed his performance, as Holland dived into his movie career to put in some context.
