Humble Pep Guardiola Says Real Madrid & Chelsea UCL Setbacks Helped In Manchester City’s Success

Citizens boss Pep Guardiola has established himself as one of the best managers in the world over the past decade. The Spanish tactician made history with Manchester City last season, helping the side get their hands on their very first UEFA Champions League title. However, Rome wasn’t built in a single day. During his press conference before the game against Everton, Guardiola touched down on his team’s failure over the years that helped them become the side they are today.

Despite being one of the best sides in Europe, Manchester City failed to get their hands on the Champions League title in 2021 and 2022, losing out in the finals and semi-finals of the tournament. However, the side made it could last season against Inter Milan, with Rodri’s goal helping the side bag their very first European silverware.

The Spanish tactician has had a fruitful spell with Manchester City over the years, helping the team lift multiple titles. With the team chasing history again, Guardiola talked about how the team’s past failures have helped them develop as a better side during his press conference before the Premier League clash against Everton.

Guardiola stated, “The reason we are here is not Istanbul. It is not to beat Inter. The reason we are here is to lose to Monaco, Liverpool, Tottenham, Lyon. Because of the UCL final against Chelsea, to lose in the last minute against Real Madrid. It hurt at that moment, but it doesn’t hurt now. It helped us beat Inter Milan, it’s a process.”

He added, “For the big clubs, they are used to it, but for us, it was new. Now, we believe we can win anywhere, we can win. It’s not just ‘Bring Pep here, and it happens immediately’. It’s a process. We arrived to finish 8 years of work with many disappointments – but it’s part of life and sport.”

Manchester City, against all odds, proved their critics wrong by defeating Inter Milan in the finals of the Champions League to get their hands on the title for the first time.
