However, the age-old cup competition provides thrills, spills, and shocks for all ages. Some games completely etch into the fans’ minds because of their unpredictable nature. During the 2013 FA Cup final, Wigan Athletic provided a shocking upset by defeating Manchester City. However, in 1992, Wrexham provided the most shocking upset in FA Cup history. 

Former Wrexham manager and player Brian Flynn recalled the grand occasion when the team upset English Premier League giants Arsenal. Thus, it became a moment to remember one of the oldest clubs in the world.

The sensational manager explained the thought process behind the victory in a recent interview. Flynn recalled, “So leading up to the Arsenal game, the week off when I say everything went to plan. All the major things went the plan. We never predicted Mickey Thomas taking the free kick. Never predicted. I think the best thing that happened in the first half is that they scored late on, and we were still in the game.”

Around 90 places had separated them from the English football pyramid, and the third-round meeting became iconic. Arsenal dominated the game, but a stunning free-kick from Mickey Thomas brought them back. After that, England international Tony Adams slipped, only for Steve Watkin to score the iconic goal.

Flynn continued, “If they first scored in six minutes, it could have been 6-0 in the first half. Because it was six minutes left, and it gives me something to work on in the dressing room at half-time, and I said something unpredictable will happen. We kept saying that all week. Something you never believe could happen. Never believe Mickey would put the ball into that top corner from that distance.”

The mother of all shocks!

No one predicted the result to happen because of Arsenal’s superiority. The 1990-91 season saw Arsenal crowned English division champions. Apart from Adams, they had sensational players like Paul Merson, Alan Smith, and the late David Rocastle to hurt Wrexham. Yet, the small town came from behind to score a convincing victory over the English giants. As soon as the final whistle, fans rushed onto the pitch to celebrate with the fans.
