The iconic Camp Nou was home to Lionel Messi and his astonishing talents for almost two decades. However, he failed to extend his contract in 2021 as he left for French giants PSG. And things got better as he won the Qatar World Cup in 2022, ending Argentina’s 36-year-old wait for this prestigious trophy.
But, many fans have been vocal about how Barcelona fans celebrated his stunning World Cup feat. Former Barcelona soccer player Cesc Fabregas reasoned those sentiments in an interview.
Cesc Fabregas: "Barça fans celebrating Messi's current achievements? Sentimentally, Messi will always be a Barça player. He is the most important player in the club's history. And that will not change. It doesn't matter if he won the World Cup as a PSG player." pic.twitter.com/Z7rigba49x

As he spent the vast majority of his career in Barcelona, the club faithful loved the icon and celebrated his World Cup victory. The emotional connection they share is eye-opening. After he left the club, fans bent down on their knees with outbursts of emotion to see their prodigal son end his time in Barcelona. Fabregas put out those emotions perfectly in the interview.
Fabregas discusses Barcelona’s love for Lionel Messi
The former player commented, “Barça fans celebrating Messi’s current achievements? Sentimentally, Messi will always be a Barça player. He is the most important player in the club’s history. And that will not change. It doesn’t matter if he won the World Cup as a PSG player.” It could be understood better if we compare him with other players.
Take David Beckham as an example. Even though he played in several clubs, his time at Manchester United made him one of their own. Similarly, those are the same feeling Barcelona fan gets when they think about Messi. And how can’t anyone admire him? During his time with Barcelona, he scored 672 goals and provided 303 assists with the club.
