The USMNT is one of the few national teams who are on the lookout for a head coach. With the best managers already currently well placed in their jobs, the US Soccer board is finding it extremely difficult to attract a good head coach. Former Real Madrid manager, Zinedine Zidane seemed like a favorite to take the job at one point. However, the French soccer legend then publicly stated that he wouldn’t be interested.

However, according to recent reports, the USMNT seems to be linked to the ‘Special One’. Fans from across the world are quite confused and bewildered after hearing the rumor.

Jose Mourinho set to manage the USMNT?

According to the Sun, Jose Mourinho seems to be very high on the list of potential replacements for Gregg Berhalter. The Portuguese soccer manager is currently the head coach of AS Roma, an Italian soccer club. However, it will really not be an easy job for the USMNT to poach Mourinho.

Mourinho won the Europa Conference League with Roma last season and also finished 6 on the points table. Halfway into this season, Roma is in 6 position again but every other team around them is in really close proximity. The USMNT will face a serious challenge in order to convince Mourinho and AS Roma to prematurely end their long-term plan.

The USMNT looks like a decent favorite to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The ‘Special One’ will have more than enough time to nurture a young core group of players for the USMNT if he decides to move to America as soon as possible. Anthony Hudson is currently serving as the interim head coach of the USMNT.

However, the US soccer fans did not welcome Hudson very kindly. The fans were extremely upset with the board after they stated the need to get an upgrade after Berhalter.

Gregg Berhalter did quite a decent job at the USMNT. However, the fans strongly felt it was time for an upgrade after the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Coincidently Berhalter’s contract was set to expire at the end of 2022. However, Berhalter was already part of too much controversy when he left the job. One of the main ones was the ‘Berhalter-Reyna’ controversy.

The fans also blamed Berhalter for his poor decision-making during the World Cup. Nobody could quite understand the logic behind Giovanni Reyna’s constant exclusion from the USMNT starting XI. It seems unlikely that Gregg Berhalter will return to manage the USMNT again. However, the US Soccer board needs to find a solution quickly to this glaring problem. The USMNT will play two friendlies at the end of January, followed by the CONCACAF Nations League in March.
