Kevin De Bruyne is a name that needs no introduction. The Belgian maestro has enjoyed a stellar domestic career so far. But beneath his success comes a story of hardship from his early Chelsea years. While supporters still wonder why he left the Londoners, former manager Jose Mourinho has offered his clarification. Contrary to popular belief, Chelsea did not choose to part ways with the Belgian maestro. Instead, De Bruyne himself decided to leave, even though he was granted a desired starting position and the management wouldn’t allow him to go on loan.

The revelation surfaced in a discussion on “The Obi One” podcast. The AS Roma coach shared insights into why Kevin De Bruyne chose not to remain at Stamford Bridge. After revealing that he didn’t sell Mohamed Salah, the manager quickly shed light on De Bruyne’s situation.

Jose Mourinho revealed that before the preseason tour in Asia, Chelsea informed him that De Bruyne was going on loan to a German club. However, the Portuguese gaffer denied the Blues’ proposal, insisting, ‘he’ll be a starting XI in the Premier League.’ However, the player was adamant about leaving after not being given enough chances. “He [De Bruyne] wanted to leave. When you are Chelsea and you want to leave, go; the other one comes. But they [De Bruyne and Salah] were just kids that couldn’t wait. And their career says they were right. They had fantastic careers. But it was not me. Probably the other guys, I did push them out, but not them.”

It is indeed quite an eyebrow-raising revelation from the ‘Special One.’ Notably, De Bruyne made just nine overall appearances for Chelsea after arriving in 2013. The Belgian superstar went back on loan to his childhood club, KRC Genk, and also played a season for Werder Bremen. In 2014, VFL Wolfsburg signed him permanently, but he was finally snatched by the Cityzens a year later. Either way, De Bruyne’s decision proved favorable, as he has become an icon at Manchester City.

One take at a time

I first kicked a soccer ball when I was 12. My early exposure to playing the sport earned me many accolades at the zonal and district levels. I still remember my first goal, where I scored a 90+5 minute header like Sergio Ramos did in the 2014 Champions League final against Atletico Madrid.
