Lionel Messi, one of the most accomplished players in soccer history, has amassed over 50 individual accolades throughout his illustrious career. However, now the Argentine maestro finds himself in contention for an unusual award he has yet to achieve in his illustrious career spanning two decades. Surprisingly, this nomination comes from the ESLAND awards.
For those not aware, the ESLAND Awards is an annual event honoring Spanish-speaking content creators. One might question the connection between a soccer player and a streamer award ceremony. However, the explanation lies in Lionel Messi’s moment of frustration with Ibai Llanos back in October of last year.

The recipients of these awards are determined through public votes, and the result will be announced at the awards ceremony that will be held on February 17 and 18. It will be intriguing to witness if the Inter Miami forward, who holds exceptional records with numerous Ballon d’Ors and golden boots, will claim this unconventional trophy as well. It is worth noting that this is not the first Lionel Messi outburst that has been nominated for such an unusual accolade.

Another instance of La Pulga’s anger receiving a nomination occurred during the World Cup 2022 following the infamous quarter-final match against the Netherlands. Following a tense victory, Messi taunted Dutch striker Wout Weghorst with the phrase, “Qué mirás, bobo? Andá pa’ allá bobo,” which translates to, “What are you looking at, fool? Go over there, fool.”
This incident quickly went viral and resulted in the Argentine receiving a nomination for the best viral moment at the MTV MIAW Awards 2023. Alongside Lionel Messi, Shakira’s diss track aimed at her ex Gerard Pique was also in contention. However, neither of these moments ultimately claimed the award.
