Owning a soccer club is one of the most demanding jobs in the world. Sports club owners need to constantly find ways to pump money into their clubs. Running a soccer club is not a business anymore, it is an art. Not generating sufficient revenue for the club can lead to major losses.

If these losses aren’t mended quickly enough, the club could shut down. Boston Breakers was one such franchise that unfortunately has to stop its operations. The NWSL announced that they would be open to adding two teams more into the league from 2024 onwards.

The Mayor of Boston is eyeing a comeback into American soccer. LeBron James’ Liverpool connections could potentially be involved.

A new club in NWSL? Are Liverpool’s co-owners and LeBron James involved too?

Earlier this year, the National Women’s Soccer League announced that they’d be open to expanding the NWSL from 12 to 14 teams. The NWSL is rapidly picking up a solid chunk of American viewership season after season.

It’s no surprise that the Mayor of Boston, Michelle Wu, wants a soccer club to represent the city. Boston did have a home soccer club named Boston Breakers prior to this. The Breakers were once upon a time a very well-established soccer franchise. However, due to severely poor financial decisions, the club had to fold in 2017.

“[Boston Breakers] wasn’t a failure of the market, but more a failure of just the time and the model put forth,” said Epstein.

Epstein’s bid for an NWSL franchise in Boston has also received support from Boston’s Mayor Michelle Wu. The founder of Juno Equity, Jennifer Epstein, is one of the two members of the group. Epstein is also the Celtics co-owner, Robert Epstein’s daughter.

The other member of the investment group is Linda Henry. Henry is the co-owner of the Boston Red Sox and English soccer club, Liverpool F.C. Rumours already suggest that Utah Royals might have already booked its place for a comeback.
