Phil Foden Likens Himself to Lionel Messi After Breaking Manchester United’s 10 Year Record

Phil Foden is currently the talk of the town. The English midfielder has taken the spotlight for his brilliant performance in last night’s nail-biting Manchester derby, playing a pivotal role in securing his side an emphatic 3-1 victory against Erik ten Hag’s side. But the youngster seems to have done more than that, as he channeled his inner Lionel Messi after breaking a decade-old record held by Manchester United.
When the Sky Blues’ academy product was substituted in the 90+6th minute, with Oscar Bobb replacing him, it somehow evoked memories for fans reminiscent of a moment from 14 years ago involving Lionel Messi. The English international mirrored a victory stroll similar to the one La Pulga took in an El Clásico match in 2010 when Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 5-0 at Camp Nou. Messi, with a slight injury, limped off the pitch while gazing at the scoreboard with sheer pride. This comparison has been circulating on the internet, with a netizen posting a video of Messi’s walk alongside a caption on X saying, “That Phil Foden walk, I have seen it before.” Surprisingly, City’s No. 47 reacted to the tweet by liking it.

Perhaps Foden found the tweet relatable, as he candidly expressed his honest reaction. Notably, United were up at the Etihad in just 8 minutes, thanks to a rocket strike from Marcus Rashford. However, the second half saw Foden respond by scoring the equalizer with a similar goal, with minutes later doubling City’s lead, as injury time saw Erling Haaland put the game to bed. Notably, with this brace, Foden also etched his name in the history books by ending the Red Devils’ 10-year feat.

Phil Foden successfully ends Manchester United’s decade-long streak
Last night’s loss witnessed Manchester United facing a type of defeat they haven’t encountered in ten years. Before the match, the Red Devils hadn’t suffered a Premier League defeat when leading at halftime since Leicester’s 5-3 victory over them in 2014 under Louis van Gaal. During this period, they had won 123 and drawn 20 out of 143 games. However, this long-standing record came to an end as Manchester City rallied from a first-half deficit to secure all three points.

The victory keeps City in second place in the table with 62 points. On the other hand, United slipped to sixth place with 44 points. The Red Devils failed to make an impact as they registered a single shot on target out of three taken, compared to City’s 8 on target out of 27. Likewise, Foden’s brace saw his Premier League goal tally rise to 11. Nevertheless, it was a good day at the office for Foden. Let’s hope it stays that way for the youngster as well as for Manchester City.
