It was just a week ago when Erling Haaland‘s finishing skills earned rave reviews. His brace against Everton was lauded by Alan Shearer who also claimed the Norwegian was having to “feed off scraps” all game. However, against Chelsea, Haaland’s subpar finishing proved detrimental to Manchester City. In fact, the striker earned an unwanted record for himself. And even a rival of Chelsea, Piers Morgan took the time to poke fun at the Norwegian ace.

Arsenal fan Piers Morgan is enjoying the league this season. However, it was his social media activity yesterday that created a buzz. The English broadcaster posted a picture of a disappointed Erling Haaland during the Chelsea game on X with the caption, ‘Hi Mate‘. The context was an uncharacteristic performance from the Premier League’s top goalscorer this season. He couldn’t score even after receiving 9 chances to do so. In the process, he accumulated an xG of 1.71. This is the most xG and shots by Haaland in a match where he has failed to score.

The striker’s performance has left many fans disappointed. Chelsea have had a disappointing campaign until now and a win over the Blues could have seen Pep Guardiola‘s side leapfrog Arsenal. However, for the 2nd time this season, Chelsea have taken points off City. However, Erling Haaland’s teammate Rodri refused to blame the prolific striker. Instead, he cited the defending as the reason for the disappointing result.

Rodri said, “We knew about their counter-attacks and fast players, but I think we have to defend the counter-attack better.” Likewise, Pep Guardiola also came to the defense of the under-fire striker. And the Man City boss has no doubts that Haaland will soon be back to his best.

‘Next day he’ll score’, Guardiola defends Erling Haaland’s rare bad day at the office

The Man City boss was asked about Erling Haaland’s performance in the post-match presser. Amusingly, he said, “I’m not a proper man to give advice to strikers.” Pep Guardiola’s reasoning was his less-than-impressive record of 11 goals in 11 years. However, he said, “We created the chances and next time he’s going to score. I don’t blame him. Next day he’ll score.”

Moreover, the match also ended Man City’s 11-game winning streak. Guardiola feels the first-half performance is to be blamed. He explained, “The first half was not our levels but to compete against these teams you have to play 90 minutes, not just one half.” However, he did praise the team’s comeback in the second half and described it as ‘incredible’.

With Liverpool and Arsenal ahead of them, the Sky Blues will need more such halves to win a record 4th consecutive Premier League title.
