“I’m just not seeing that passion”—this is what Carli Lloyd remarked earlier after the USWNT’s shocking group stage performance in the 2023 FIFA World Cup. The stance, though, seems to have changed now, after she heard, ‘We need to get back to the football,’ from none other than Lindsey Horan. The captain, who is urging her teammates to pen a tale of resurgence, got staunch support from Lloyd.

This intense backing came after Horan sat down for an interview with The Athletic and made some eyebrow-raising, candid remarks over the USA’s current soccer scenario. Although it caused a stir among fans, Lloyd took to her X account, resharing the interview taken by Meg Linhen and writing a few words of appreciation for Lindsey Horan. She wrote, “Love this article…Proud of you @LindseyHoran! [clapping and dart emoji].”

Interestingly, aside from appreciating the USWNT captain’s determination, the veteran also added one of the claims made by Lindsey Horan in the interview; “We need to get back to the football. The football is the most important thing. So maybe we should knock some of the sh*t out for now. We need to focus on the game, we need to focus on being the absolute best we can be.” It seems Carli Lloyd is impressed to see the NT’s captain reigniting the zeal of her fellow teammates. But not everyone may resonate with the USWNT legend over Horan’s claims.

Notably, aside from rallying her national teammates to get things back on track, Horan had also slammed her country’s fans for not understanding ‘the beautiful game’! This rather drew her criticism from a USMNT veteran. What exactly happened?

In a similar interview, Horan said that many American soccer fans ‘aren’t smart’ and don’t know the game better. However, Alexi Lalas was rather unimpressed with these claims and expressed his thoughts. “So, not satisfied with already turning off many Americans who don’t watch soccer, evidently the USWNT has now set their sights on turning off many Americans who do watch soccer. Bold strategy,” he wrote.

Lalas believes that the Lyon star’s claims are unusual and peculiar at this specific moment. Thus, it appears that Alexi Lalas wants Lindsey Horan to avoid being involved in any further controversy while the USWNT is rebuilding. Horan has always been candid and this time too, she freely expressed her beliefs and determination to lead her squad back to success.

One take at a time

I first kicked a soccer ball when I was 12. My early exposure to playing the sport earned me many accolades at the zonal and district levels. I still remember my first goal, where I scored a 90+5 minute header like Sergio Ramos did in the 2014 Champions League final against Atletico Madrid.
