In contrast to the current era, Wrexham enjoyed a period of dominance in the past. They were a formidable force in the world of soccer and were accustomed to participating in European competitions during that time. Today we’ll walk down the memory lane, through an unheard story that involves Manchester United legend, Sir Alex Ferguson.

The story dates back almost two decades. It has been narrated by the Welsh club’s legendary manager, Brian Flynn, who recently sat down for an interview with the Red Dragons’ dedicated fan page, Fearless in Devotion podcast. There he shared that once Alex Ferguson hired a private helicopter to take one of his team’s players, Dwight Yorke, from an international match to the airport. However, he decided to snub the game.

Yorke, along with two Wrexham players, Carlos Edwards, and Hector Sam, had to catch their flight back to the UK from Trinidad. Fynn said, “I found out, from Sir Alex, United had put a helicopter outside to take him from the match to the airport by chopper… back in Manchester and Wrexham that night.

Flynn continued how he questioned Edwards and Sam, who missed their flight and didn’t arrive for training on Thursday. “They come in Friday morning… Carlos can’t tell lies, Hector could, he could lie all day and we’d believe him.” While Sam was able to lie, Edwards couldn’t hide anything and came to explain at Flynn’s office.

He continued by saying that both Carlos and Hector joined Dwight for the helicopter ride. At that moment, Dwight instructed the pilot to head for Tobago. “The pilot said ‘No’ and Dwight said ‘No, take me home to Tobago’, so they went to Tobago and stayed with him in his mansion.” Flynn believes they were partying at his house.

Later, he added that Sir Alex eventually called him and apologized to the Wrexham boss. Flynn jokingly added, “He knew what Dwight was like!” Indeed, it was a classic, hilarious story. Flynn once also helped Sir Alex sign one of the club’s greatest players of all time.

Flynn helped Sir Alex Ferguson

This is another interesting story, but Flynn actually helped Sir Alex sign the Red Devils’ most important player. And that player was none other than Peter Schmeichel. This comes from 1990 when Wrexham was preparing for their First Round match against Lyngby in the UEFA Cup Winners Cup. Manager Brian Flynn made the decision to personally attend one of Lyngby’s games.

The match was against their rival, Brondby, and took place just a few days prior to their upcoming fixture against Wrexham. Upon Flynn’s return from his trip, a member of his office relayed the news that Sir Alex was seeking to have a conversation with him. When he called him back, the United manager asked him about the ‘young Brondby goalkeeper’. And it was none other than, Peter Schmeichel. Placing his trust in Flynn’s words, Sir Alex agreed to sign the Danish goalkeeper. The rest is, of course, history.
