Inter Miami was finally starting to show its potential after five impressive wins in the Leagues Cup. Lionel Messi, the new captain of Herons, elevated the team’s gameplay to its highest level with his presence. Following Miami’s quarter-final win against Charlotte FC, the head coach had a contentious conversation in the press conference.

Gerardo Martino’s tactical acumen and strategic brilliance helped Inter Miami turn their season around and secured a semi-final berth in the Leagues Cup. The arrival of the veteran players and the Argentine coach helped the Herons to make significant progress towards their first silverware of the season. Inter Miami sacked Phil Neville in June 2023 for the poor results that led to an 11-game losing streak. In addition to signing their new coach, the Herons also recruited world-class players like Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba, which seemed fruitful for the team in the recent cup tie. After Inter Miami’s ecstatic performance against Charlotte FC, a journalist asked Tata Martino about his plan if things went either way in the cup tie and the strategy to handle the blame that would fall on him.

The reporter asked, “How do you live with the feeling that if you don’t win everything, if you don’t reach the final of tournaments and don’t win them, surely the blame is going to fall on you? Because everyone is probably going to call you a failure if you don’t win everything”.

In recent years, soccer managers had often been scapegoated for their team’s poor performances and results. In response to the journalist’s remark about failure, Tata Martino gave a calm and measured reply. He acknowledged that any coach would be susceptible to having a bad day on the pitch, but also stressed the importance of being prepared for any situation that comes around. Martino believed that each win for Inter Miami brings with it a greater responsibility to succeed, as well as the potential hatred from the media and fans if the winning streak falls apart.

The head coach commented, “I think it’s too much of a reward when things are going well. I also think that sometimes the punishment is excessive. Especially when the punishment or the award is not preceded by a correct analysis”. Meanwhile, the Herons continue their winning streak to their semi-final tie in the Leagues Cup.
