The Netflix documentary ‘Beckham‘ has been a treat for soccer fans. It takes fans through the legendary career of one of the sport’s most iconic figures, David Beckham. The documentary offers a unique perspective, with various figures and players making appearances to share their experiences and insights. However, one notable absence from the documentary is former England coach Glenn Hoddle, who declined the offer to make an appearance.

Hoddle played an instrumental role in shaping the 48-year-old’s career. As the coach of the England national team, Hoddle was responsible for giving Beckham his international debut in 1996. He also guided the team during the infamous 1998 World Cup, where Beckham received a red card that made the Manchester United legend a public enemy.

Given Hoddle’s significant influence on Beckham’s career, fans were eagerly anticipating his presence in the documentary to shed light on their time together. However, to the surprise of many, Hoddle didn’t appear in the documentary. In a recent interview with talkSPORT, the director of the show, Fisher Stevens, shed some light on this matter.

Stevens, who made Beckham work 45-50 hours on the documentary, revealed that he did reach out to Hoodle. In his words, “I called him and asked him to be in it many times.” Stevens further shared, “I mean, I didn’t personally, but we contacted his people. I guess he just wasn’t interested in being in the series.”

This revelation raises questions as to why the former midfielder would decline such an opportunity. Even figures like Atletico Madrid coach, Diego Simeone, the man responsible for forcing the red card on Beckham in the 1998 World Cup made an appearance. But, it seems like Victoria Beckham might have an answer to this.

Victoria Beckham believes Hoodle failed to ‘protect’ David Beckham

It all dates back to the 1998 World Cup Round of 16 match between England and Argentina. During this game, David Beckham received a red card for kicking Diego Simeone in the back. As a consequence, England lost the match and this incident sparked a wave of nationwide contempt towards Beckham.

Victoria Beckham though holds Glenn Hoddle accountable for her husband’s mistreatment in the media. She asserts that Hoddle failed to shield the Inter Miami owner from public scrutiny, amplifying the disdain he faced at just 23 years old. In her documentary, she disclosed, “Glenn Hoddle didn’t come out and try to protect him.”

She further stated, “And how old was David, 23? You’re a kid at 23. Glenn Hoddle was a man”. It is evident that the fashion designer maintains the belief that Glenn Hoddle could have alleviated the hostility directed at her spouse by advocating for him. It is possible that this bad memory is what led Hoddle to decline participation in the documentary.
