On 11th February, Defending champion Sofia Kenin battled against Kaia Kanepi at the Australian Open. Considering that Kanepi was the World No. 65, many expected an easy win for Kenin. However, that was not the case and the American unfortunately lost the match 6-3, 6-2.
Sofia Kenin vs Kaia Kanepi: The First Set
The first set of the match was not a good one for Sofia Kenin. She was broken very early in the match and it gave the upper hand to Kanepi. The Estonian didn’t let go of this advantage and closed out the set 6-3 to put the pressure on Kenin. At this time, the American had to win the second set.

The Second Set
The second set was a very important one for Kenin but she sadly did not start it well at all. She was broken very early by Kanepi, who raced to a 3-1 lead in the second set.
The Estonian was playing amazing well -hitting many winners and making fewer unforced errors. Such amazing tennis got her another break in the set to serve for the match at 5-2.
She did not hesitate to finish off the match 6-3 6-2 and in the process, she ended Sofia Kenin’s hopes for her first-ever title defense.

It was certainly a disappointing loss for Kenin. The American had an amazing 2020 season winning the Australian Open and reaching the final of the French Open.
After such a season, she definitely did not expect to lose so early at a Grand Slam. However, she will not be affected by it. Kenin will be training harder than ever and we should see her do very well at later events in 2021.
