US Open 2020 has already given us some entertaining matches following an insufferable break. Other than the marathon match between Serena Williams and Maria Sakkari, the pre-quarterfinal between Alize Cornet and Tsvetana Pironkova too had the viewers on the edge of their seats.
On the verge of bowing out of the tournament, Cornet displayed immense will to withstand long rallies and scoreboard pressure and put on a show.
Pironkova had won the first set 6-4 and was leading the second set 6 games to 5. However, a cornered Cornet won a thrilling 40-shot rally to come back and clinch the set in the tiebreaker. Although Cornet fought well, Pironkova took the third set 6-3 eventually, pocketing the match and proceeding to the quarterfinals.

“It feels great,” Pironkova had confessed. “It feels amazing. Of course, unexpected. But just super happy. It feels the same to me, it feels normal to me. I’ve been doing that for more than 15 years. I just had three years’ break. That’s kind of how I grew up, what I have been doing for a long, long time. You cannot just forget it like that. It just doesn’t happen that way, I guess.”
