UFC welterweight Colby Covington spoke to Mike Bohn from MMA Junkie ahead of UFC 261 set for Jacksonville, Florida. At the event, the undisputed divisional title will be on the line as Jorge Masvidal challenges Kamaru Usman. While Covington isn’t directly involved in the contest, his presence before the fight has inserted his name into the narrative.
Covington comes in as the former interim welterweight champion, and some fans argue is the second-best behind Usman. He gave ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ his toughest test to date and extended Usman to the fifth and final round. Since then, he’s bounced back with a dominant finish over Tyron Woodley and believes he’s undeniably the next in line.

Colby Covington goes off on champ Kamaru Usman
While talking to Bohn about his future prospects in the division, Colby Covington left no doubt about his stance. The All-American wrestler from Oregon state called his shot next and has already revealed that he wants to face off with the winner of Usman vs Masvidal. Either fight would be massive as Covington has long-standing feuds with both men.
He said, “I’m fighting for the welterweight title next fight. Doesn’t matter who’s there, doesn’t matter is Marty is scared of me and wants to retire too but I’m fighting for that title and I’m going to take that title.”

Straight for the throne: ‘Chaos’ Covington
Colby Covington has taken a rather varied approach to self-promotion and has made himself the heel against anyone he faces. This has helped to significantly boost his stock in the division and elevate his overall profile. What’s more, he backs up his flagrant attitude to fight promotion with dominant performances under the bright lights.
The landscape of the welterweight division is exciting, as many contenders are converging at the top. However, Colby Covington has separated himself from the pack as Dana White has come out and labeled him as the next man in line. Fans will be looking to see how things shape out in the octagon at the Vystar Veterans Memorial arena.
