As popular as he is within the MMA community, Joe Rogan has had his fair share of beef with UFC fighters. One of the more recent ones involved Conor McGregor going after him for his commentary during the UFC 229 bout between McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov. The Irishman did not take kindly to Rogan, calling foul on some of his ground strikes against Nurmagomedov. He also went after Rogan after the UFC commentator accused McGregor of steroid use. However, not all of such spats stemmed from negative commentary or allegations.
Surprisingly, Rogan once angered a UFC star by paying him a compliment.
On JRE MMA Show #135, Rogan hosted retired UFC veteran and commentator Paul Felder. During their conversation, the pair landed on the subject of Ferguson. They discussed Ferguson’s infamous knee injury and his fights against Khabib Nurmagomedov that never happened. While on the subject, Rogan recalled unintentionally making him mad once.

When Joe Rogan made Tony Ferguson mad
Talking about ‘El Cucuy’ Felder brought up the viral ‘Tony Ferguson is the type of guy’ jokes. Joe Rogan burst into laughter at the mention of those memes, adding that they were amazing.
As an afterthought, Felder said he hoped Tony Ferguson would take these jokes and enjoy them, but added that the former interim lightweight champion was the type of guy that got mad about it.

In his response, Rogan recalled how he made Ferguson mad once, “He got mad because I called him a brilliant weirdo.”
However, Rogan meant the comment as a compliment. He explained, “But he’s so unusual. I mean just his style of moving, and he’d catch you with these weird punches and he would train on a Wing Chun dummy.”

Elaborating on Ferguson’s training methods, the former Fear Factor host pointed out a similarity between the UFC star and Floyd Mayweather.
Rogan on how Ferguson and Floyd Mayweather trained similarly
Rogan told Felder of how his friend Eddie Bravo talked about Tony Ferguson’s insane conditioning. Rogan quoted Bravo saying, “He said Tony was in such f***ing insane shape that… He would run these hills, run back down, while these guys are still running, and lap them going up the hill.”
Felder then recollected former UFC star Jeremy Stephens‘ account of training with Ferguson. Stephens told Felder how Ferguson would wake him up at two in the night to go for runs.

Rogan suddenly remarked Mayweather was also like that. He said, “That’s Floyd Mayweather. He would go to a club. Drink water. Hang out with everybody and run ten miles home. But that’s what it takes to be elite. I just don’t think Tony got his chance.”
Do you agree with Rogan that Ferguson never got his chance to be elite? What are some of your favorite Tony Ferguson performances? And what is your favorite ‘Tony Ferguson is the type of guy’ joke?
