UFC President Dana White once turn down the possibility of Jorge Masvidal fighting Conor McGregor in an interview with TMZ almost four years ago. Retired UFC veteran Chael Sonnen has touched on this issue in a video he posted on his YouTube Channel. He reiterated what happened during that interview.

Sonnen claims that the TMZ reporter didn’t have much knowledge of the sport, but knew just a couple of famous names. “That guy [TMZ reporter] didn’t do that to create something special. He didn’t know the sport. He knew a couple of names, he’s got a camera and he sees Dana White, and he goes to work. He goes into business,” said the retired MMA veteran.

Sonnen also claims that Dana White knew why he was asked that question but Dana White decided to give a polite answer and told the reporter that Jorge Masvidal is ‘too big’ for Conor McGregor. Chael Sonnen said, “I knew what Dana was doing. I knew why the cameraman asked that question in the first place, and I also knew how p*ssed off Conor was gonna be.”

The next time Conor McGregor fought was against Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone at 170 lbs at UFC 246. Sonnen said, “When Conor took the fight he said ‘ I’m doing it in 170 because Dana said I wasn’t big enough for this division. The whole thing was about Masvidal.”

McGregor won the match via knockout in the first round. Michael Bisping has also recently named a few matches he wants for 2023. He had added Masvidal vs McGregor as one of his ‘must-see’ matches. But Chael Sonnen believes that a match between ‘Gamebred’ and ‘Mystic Mac’ could have been the talk of the town if it took place a year or a couple of years earlier.
