Former UFC bantamweight champion Miesha Tate is reportedly scheduled to make a return to UFC action in October. The number 8 ranked former champ is set to come back on the October 16 card against number 7 ranked Ketlen Vieira. The bout will be quintessential in Miesha Tate’s journey up the ranks back to title contention.

Given her status as a marquee former champ, all signs point to her entering the bout within the capacity of a headliner.

‘Cupcake’ Tate made her comeback against the oldest female fighter on the roster in her last fight. She returned after a near 5-year lay-off and soundly defeated Marion Reneau via TKO to reassert her dominance in the division. The fight was a major contrast as Tate was making her comeback just as Reneau was getting ready to retire from the sport.

Vieira is coming off a loss in her last fight to Yana Kunitskaya that came via unanimous decision back in February. She’s 1-2 in her last three fights and it’s important that she secures a win in her bout against Tate in October. Another loss at this point in her career could be disastrous as she aims to claw her way to a title shot.

The women’s featherweight division is ruled with an iron-clad fist by the ever-dominant Amanda Nunes. ‘The Lioness’ has been a formidable force to deal with and Vieira believes she has the tools to beat her. However, the re-surging Tate has her own path mapped out, and it includes avenging her title loss to Nunes from UFC 200.

Tate showed that she is still a competitive force and that the lay-off hasn’t had much of an effect on her. Moreover, she became a mother as well as ventured into a corporate role with ONE Championship since her UFC retirement. However, she’s decided to return with a renewed focus and has nothing but greatness on her mind.

A title fight against Nunes is not in her immediate future, but given her marquee name, it can happen sooner than expected. She will probably have to fight once more after facing Vieira and she will then be within skipping distance of a title shot.
