It has been confirmed by a lot of media outlets that a title fight between Belal Muhammad and Leon ‘Rocky’ Edwards is currently in talks for UFC 300 on April 13th, 2024. Regardless, the chances of it making the main event are pretty low due to fans being discouraged by the matchup. So what could help Leon Edwards headline the historic event if not a fight against Muhammad?

As many know, Leon Edwards could have a possible matchup against Islam Makhachev. Strictly due to the lightweight champion’s interest in the welterweight title, as was shown after the outcome of UFC 296 via Makhachev’s Twitter (X) account. Here is what a UFC legend has to say about the whole debacle in the welterweight division.

Despite matchmaking rumors, UFC legend Chael Sonnen fails to see how a fight between Belal Muhammad and Leon Edward would headline the historic UFC 300 event. However, he believes that there is a way for Edwards to headline the main event of the UFC 300 card.

Sonnen believes that the only way Edwards can headline the event is if Islam Makhachev challenges him for the welterweight strap. Sonnen backs up the matchup by saying, “The only other person that’s even talking about that [welterweight] belt is Islam Makhachev, who was pretty active talking about it”.

But sadly, Sonnen goes on to explain why the fight between the two won’t take place. Especially at UFC 300. The UFC legend explains the reason as being Ramadan, which takes place in March. Islam Makhachev, being a devout Muslim, won’t fight in that period. He concludes, saying, “Those kinds of convictions? I don’t know the answer to that. But it starts to look more and more as though it is not Islam.”

As per Sonnen’s theories, it would seem that the welterweight champion is left without an opponent for his announced fight at UFC 300. So who would be the most likely opponent for Leon Edwards at UFC 300?

Leon Edwards is likely to fight at UFC 300, as he announced during the halftime of a soccer match between Aston Villa and Burnley. But the question still looms as to who his opponent would be for UFC 300. Some sources point out a fight between Leon Edwards and Belal Muhammad being in talks for UFC 300. However, it has yet to be confirmed.

Despite having a little hype behind the fight, it is undoubtedly the fight to make. Edwards is currently on a roll with 13 straight wins, and Belal Muhammad is right behind him with a 10-fight win streak. The two also faced off inside the octagon in March 2021, which ended abruptly in a no-contest due to an eye poke. The two certainly have some unfinished business to take care of, so a fight at UFC 300, despite not headlining the event, won’t be surprising.
