Decades Later, Joe Rogan Opens Up About ‘Challenging Things’ at UFC During Initial Commentating Days

MMA fans always associate the UFC commentator Joe Rogan with his UFC job. While Joe Rogan also hosts a popular podcast and works as a stand-up comic too, the American’s name is synonymous with UFC. Further, the fans admire the color commentator for his unique and nonchalant commenting style. However, Rogan in his podcast revealed that this was not the case in the initial days of his UFC career.
The former “Fear Factor” host in episode #1881 shared the mic duties with the famous record producer, Rick Rubin. While the conversation drifted and touch every genre, the episode surely entertained the fans with various anecdotes and stories.

In the podcast, the duo discussed Rick Rubin’s house-burning incident, hip-hop origin, Eminem, and Rubin’s love for wrestling. Further, Joe Rogan opened up about his experience during the UFC commentating gig. Following that, he explained how difficult it was to break down the complex techniques to a casual viewer.
The UFC commentator in the segment explained how engrossed he was in the MMA world. The guest, Rick Rubin, then drew a parallel between physical chess and Joe Rogan’s statement. Rogan then clarified that while chess pieces have limited movement, MMA has abundant creativity.
Rubin thereafter described his experience of watching one of Royce Gracie’s fights. He subsequently revealed that he was unable to comprehend the wild nature of the fight.

Joe Rogan followed this with a declaration that was one of the challenging things about his job. Then he recounted his initial UFC commentating gig days.
Rogan said, “When I first aboard with UFC to explain that aspect to the casual, to the person at the home. Like when someone like Royce, I commentated on some of Royce’s fights but later in his career or one of Royce’s fights. The, the challenge is to explain the Jiu-Jitsu cause everybody kind of understands all. That guy punched that guy, the other guy just kicked that guy, makes sense to people, that’s an impact, got hurt.”

The 55-year-old then went ahead to explain the difficult situation with a complicated technique like an Omoplata. According to Rogan, Omoplata is a rare move that only a handful of fighters have pulled off in the UFC.

Further, Rogan continued, “And to explain that [Omoplata’s technique] to people, while that is going on, explain how this person set this up, and what they have to do next.”
He therefore concluded, “And try to orchestrate, try to explain it in a way that is going to make sense to people that have never felt it. They don’t know what’s happening and just to convey my excitement of this very difficult maneuver being pulled off.”
