Stephen Thompson is currently #4 in the welterweight division. He will soon clash against the Brazilian striker Gilbert Burns inside the octagon at UFC 264.
Meanwhile, Nigerian champion Kamaru Usman reigns in the welterweight roster. The latter has defeated almost every name in the welterweight roster. However, Usman is yet to face the ‘Wonderboy’ inside the cage. And the 38-year-old is hoping to get a shot against the Nigerian native after he defeats his next opponent on July 10.
Recently in an interview with MMA Fighting the Wonderboy shared his thoughts on fighting the welterweight champion. He said, “I think he’s a great guy, good champion. I got to hang out with him a few times. On Instagram, he just posted a picture I don’t know if you saw it if you’ve seen it yet. But it’s of these graveyards and capstones of people he’s fought and faced. I am not up there yet, I’m the guy that hasn’t faced him yet.”

He added, “I pretty much, it feels like everybody in the top ten has already fought him at some point of time you know. Leon Edwards has fought him in the past Gilbert Burns fought him Colby Covington fought him. He just knocked out you know Masvidal like who else is this guy gonna fight. And then I think it was not too long ago he was talking about fighting Michael Chiesa and it’s like why wouldn’t it have been me. I think I’m a tribble matchup for him. And I do feel like that I’m the last man standing right now. A good win over Gilbert Burns, he’s gonna have to face me.”

The (16-4) record holder will have to secure a win against Burns to increase his chances for the title bout next. However, Colby Covington and Leon Edwards are also relevant in the picture as per the UFC president Dana White.
Nevertheless, a win over Burns will surely get Stephen Thompson ahead in the welterweight gold race.
