Conor McGregor has always been a little ‘Notorious’. The Irish Brat who rose to become the biggest superstar of the UFC is known for his striking as well as trash-talking capabilities. ‘Mystic Mac’, however, could have easily been an unrecognized name lost in the dark alleys of Ireland. John Kavanagh‘s guidance and compassion kept a young McGregor from the unwanted company and a horrible lifestyle. John Kavanagh recounted in his memoir ‘Win or Learn: MMA, Conor McGregor and Me: A Trainer’s Journey’ how a young Conor McGregor needed to be supervised. Kavanagh also remembered the times when McGregor took defeats to heart and even ran away with the money he owed to his coach.

After the incident, McGregor didn’t return to the gym and stopped responding to his coach’s calls. Kavanagh, however, had to hand him a clean slate when he found out from McGregor‘s mother that the young fighter was depressed and holed up in his room for days. The fresh start worked wonders for McG and Kavanagh, but the coach kept an eye on his protégé.

Conor McGregor had taken off with the money he made from selling the tickets to the fights in his gym. He was supposed to return the money to his coach John Kavanagh, who owed it to someone else. Kavanagh tried to find McGregor, but he didn’t find success until one day he got a call from McGregor‘s mom.

As Kavanagh describes, he found the young fighter looking unhealthy and depressed. Kavanagh chose to give him a clean slate but made the young boy understand he couldn’t take things for granted. Kavanagh wrote in his book, “Conor still needed a bit of supervising after that. If he stayed out until 1 am, I was aware of it and I let him know. So he knew not to push his luck. But the bottom line was that he kept showing up to the gym. He stayed on track.”

Although handing the clean slate to McG cost a few hundred dollars to Kavanagh; his eyes were set on the long-term vision for McGregor. Kavanagh believed in his capabilities and wanted him to be a successful fighter. Recounting those times, Kavanagh further wrote, I still wasn’t convinced that he would react differently to another defeat, but only time would tell. Giving Conor a clean slate after the Sitenkov saga cost me a few hundred, but it would soon prove itself to be a very worthwhile investment”

Kavanagh initially excused McGregor when he did it with the best fighter in the gym. He thought it was an enthusiastic outburst and McGregor wanted to prove himself. He was upset about McGregor‘s behavior when he continued with his arrogance.
