Namajunas started training in martial arts when she was just five years of age. Her tough childhood propelled her to adopt martial arts right from a tender age. Sources say that she took up taekwondo as the first genre of martial arts. She also earned a poom belt (junior black belt) in taekwondo at the tender age of nine years.

Namajunas’ rise through the ranks of martial arts inspired her to dive deeper and explore other fields of it. After gaining some commendable taekwondo skills, ‘Thug’ decided to train in karate and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. But things were far from perfect in her life, even at this point when she was sixteen. The now-31-year-old received the news of her estranged father’s death during this time.
