‘It Is Like the World War’- Khabib Nurmagomedov Explains the State of the UFC’s Lightweight Division

Former UFC lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov recently sat down for an interview with UFC Russia. The Dagestani fighter explained the current state of the UFC’s lightweight division.
Nurmagomedov explained how athletes from 3 different countries are a major part of the 155 lbs division.
‘The Eagle’ specifically mentioned Russia, Brazil, and the USA as the most dominating countries of the division. There are a lot of promising talents all over the division from these countries as well as established contenders. Nurmagomedov explained the situation as reminiscent of the world war.

“I doubt it is the case for the belt, but in the contending fights it is possible. They are strong, they are enough experienced. They are ready to face this challenge.
“I think they will go far, I mean Islam and all these guys. Such a nice composition of the division. Not only them but also the Brazilians,” said Nurmagomedov.
“For instance, Oliveira or take a look at Dos Anjos. The Americans are also well represented in the division. Poirier, Gaethje, Chandler. It is like the world war. The Russians, The Americans, and the Brazilians.
“So, this division has always been interesting and difficult. The most part of fight celebrities was in this division. So, I think it will be fun by the end of this year,” he further added.
Who can stake their claim for the UFC lightweight throne?

‘The Eagle‘ mentioned there are many fighters who can potentially be a contender for the lightweight title. Out of the lightweights, Islam Makhachev and Arman Tsarukyan are two of the most promising contenders of the division. Makhachev, though, seems to be the most likely contender to become a UFC champion in the future.
Makhachev hasn’t competed since his UFC 259 win against Drew Dober. He is set to fight Thiago Moises next in the main event of a UFC Fight Night card.
