Michael ‘Venom’ Page might just be the current most exciting addition to the UFC welterweight roster. The British fighter who was previously associated with Bellator is now fighting for Dana White‘s promotion and he’s bound to bring the house down too. When’s his next fight?

Page’s next and first-ever UFC bout will be against Kevin Holland at the ambitious UFC 299 pay-per-view. Page is excited and has already shown his desire to fight champion Leon Edwards for his title in England. So why is he called ‘Venom’ anyway? Here’s where the name comes from.

The ‘Venom’ in Michael Page

Michael Page is a name that is almost always pronounced with his nickname in the middle of his name. That’s unlike most fighters out there. For instance, Conor McGregor is just Conor McGregor and not usually pronounced Conor ‘The Notorious’ McGregor. See where we’re going here? ‘Venom’ is almost like a middle name for Page who received the moniker around the age of 8.

Page found early exposure to fighting and it was one of his coaches who also happened to be quite close with the family that gave him the moniker that he has kept for himself. It was just that even a young Page was able to strike with so much power that the name was inevitable.

In a recent interview with Nina Marie-Daniele, he explained how his moniker came to be. “Yeah easy one, there was a guy like an older brother to me Myron Francis. He used to train at our gym, like our extended family. He would see me as a kid, I was probably around eight or nine.”

“He would see me hitting other kids and be like for such a skinny guy, the effect on other kids was just ‘ah you got venom’. He just started calling me venom. We were both into Kung Fu movies. A film called the five deadly venoms, we started making moves for each venom.” Clearly, films and fighting had a big influence on the British striker. But it was not where his journey started.

Michael ‘Venom’ Page has a family that’s filled with Mixed Martial Artists. While his rise became a little difficult as he moved to a dangerous area of the town, his mother still admitted that Page had no choice but to learn and become a fighter.

She mentioned how she would take him to MMA classes in a stroller even before he was about a year old. The fighter also mentioned how MMA may just have saved his life when he moved to Little Mexico, a place notorious for drug-related activities.
