The doctor explained that Mitchell had suffered from what is called a post-traumatic seizure due to Emmett’s devastating strike. “This is a seizure episode that Mitchell is having as a result of his brain injury. This seems to be the direct result of that trauma [from Emmett’s punch],” the medical professional said.

He pointed out that the medical team had done a good job of keeping the fighter’s spine straight by holding his neck in position. He was relieved to see Mitchell regain consciousness quickly.

Further, he said, “I know there was a lot of criticism on the broadcast about ‘get him a stool, let him sit down’ and ya, I agree. It is nice, you should try and help somebody sit down because you always run the risk, because of their impaired coordination with the concussion, they might fall. They might get another type of injury.”

However, the doctor explained that it would be unusual to get a big injury stumbling. He shared that for something like a knee injury to take place, a lot of force would be required. A knee injury was something Joe Rogan was quite concerned about and was seen yelling at officials to get Bryce Mitchell a stool to sit on.

While Sutterer’s take gives a lot more clarity, witnessing the loss was devastating for many. After all, it was Bryce Mitchell’s first KO loss in MMA.

“His body is simply doing this because of the effect on the brain where all those neurons, those nerve cells, have fired uncontrollably. It was nice to see what the medical provider here at the head was doing. It’s always hard when somebody’s having a seizure, you want to do your best to stabilize the cervical spine,” he added.

The same evening, Mitchell released a statement sharing he was alright. He thanked people for watching his fight and further shared that the loss was the result of a poor strategy.

Additionally, he took up the fight on short notice. He had just ten days to prepare for it and replaced Giga Chikadze after he withdrew due to a groin injury.
