Alums of Dana White Contender Series meet at UFC Singapore – Waldo Cortes Acosta vs. Lukasz Brzeski
Both Acosta and Brzeski have been part of the renowned Dana White Contender Series. Of the two fighters, Acosta seems to have a more impressive streak in the UFC. Having gotten his UFC contract in August last year, Acosta came into the fight with an impressive 9-1-0 record. His only loss came at the hands of Marcos Rogerio de Lima. On the other hand, Brzeski has been having a bit of a bad run. The Polish giant lost two consecutive fights to Martin Buday and Karl Williams, both of whom are DWCS alums as well. Therefore, the UFC Singapore preliminary fight card was an important fight for Lukasz Brzeski to win, since it would put him on the winning path again.
As the fight started, Brzeski assumed the center of the Octagon. Acosta was seen bobbing in and out of the striking range. Both fighters started exchanging blows. However, Acosta quickly figured out Brzeski’s game plan. The Polish fighter threw a couple of good leg kicks and landed a few punches as well. But that was short-lived.
Acosta caught Brzeski’s leg-kicks and countered them with heavy overheads and rights of his own. The exchanges continued for a while before it all went down. Acosta packed everything he had in a right to the temple of Brzeski – and that’s all that it took. The Polish giant was rocked, and he turned his back on Acosta as he wobbled away, his legs swaying like noodles. Acosta, determined to finish his opponent continued to land strikes. His last strike landed at the back of Brzeski’s head, causing him to drop to the mat, flat on his face. The referee had to intervene to keep Acosta from brutalizing his opponent. The match was awarded to Waldo Cortes Acosta by TKO at the 3:01 mark, within the first round.

As soon as Brzeski took a punch to the back of the head, he dropped right onto the mat. The fight was called and Acosta’s hand was raised. However, the fans were in dismay. They seemed to think that the shot was an illegal shot to the back of the head.

The fight ended in a really ugly manner. Although it was a win for Acosta, the fans are clearly angered by the questionable call that the referee made. However, claims have been made that suggest that the shot was perfectly legal because it landed behind the ear and not at the back of the head.
