Japanese martial artist Hwang Lee famously summarized the importance of practice and training in MMA, “Where there is preparation, there is no fear”. Thus many students and masters of MMA have focused on the preparation, training, and sparring sessions of the game. This point is emphasized by many combat sports athletes, such as Gordon Ryan. However, things can go wrong during training and practice and can result in some serious consequences. One such incident happened a few years back and the instructor was criticized for destroying the life of the student.

The instructor sparred with his student and while doing so placed all his weight on the neck of the student and crushed his cervical vertebrae. The coach was heavily criticized for the same. But recently Gordon Ryan and Tom DeBlass have shared their opinion on the incident. Chris Weidman and some fans have also backed up the claim.

Tom DeBlass and Gordon Ryan posted a video of the freak accident that happened in the BJJ gym. DeBlass gave an explanation for the same and defended the instructor who is being blasted for being negligent to his student. He also revealed that the student got a $46,000,000 compensation for the same.

DeBlass wrote a lengthy caption to summarise his thoughts on the video. Ryan shared his post on his Instagram account too.

Chris Weidman gave his opinion on the subject in the comments section. The former UFC champion wrote, “Agree on all accounts based off this video. Sucks for everyone involved but looks like a complete accident.” The former champion is also a victim of a freak injury in the UFC.

Lastly, a fan voiced their opinion as, “The move involved is commonly done. I’ve seen my instructor do it safely in live rolling many times without incident. I have as well. Ideally the black belt should be aware of student positioning and modify his approach accordingly, but sometimes people react in unorthodox ways. I understand the student is recovering nicely, thank God.”.
