Mikey Musumeci, set to compete for the ONE Championship Submission Grappling belt, earned much acclaim after his recent collaboration. He answered some questions that Joe Rogan posited at the JRE MMA Show #127 on how he got the right technique at his match that garnered over 25 million views. The young jiujitsu black belt expert held nothing back about his rigorous training routine to perfect his move.
Musumeci explained how the organization is giving so much platform to the ‘gentle art’ that the exposure allowed it to grow. He cited the example of his match against Masakazu Imanari, which got the most views of a grappling match in history. He said, “It just shows how their platform, which is huge, could help jiujitsu expand so much. And that’s why I want to be a part of it in the growth of jiujitsu.”

When Rogan asked the young jiujitsu fighter how he was able to pull off his ‘slick’ move in the match against Imanari, Musumeci responded, “It’s just a move that I’ve been working a lot. In the week of the tournament, I was just doing it over and over and over. And when I went into the match, I was able to do it.”

Mikey Musumeci’s Dedication to BJJ

At 26 years of age, Musumeci claimed he had been training for the past 21 years in BJJ, since he was 4. His father was a fan of combat sport and so ‘Darth Rigatoni’ was introduced to it. His first taste of martial arts came in the forms of Muay Thai and BJJ.
The American trained from when he was very young, even dedicating his youth for the sake of becoming a world champion one day. He sacrificed his scholarship to a law school in Las Vegas so that he could pursue his dream.

Years later, his debut at The Home of Martial Arts, against Imanari, which won him a $50,000 performance bonus, felt like a passing of the torch in the world of grappling.
At ONE on Prime Video 2, the BJJ ace will face Cleber Sousa for the inaugural ONE Championship Submission Grappling championship. Will Musumeci be the first grappler to hold the new ONE world championship?
