Ronda Rousey spearheaded the rise of women’s MMA. The 2008 Olympic gold medalist in Judo was the first female fighter to become a UFC champion. After defending her title 6 times, Rousey met with a major setback as she lost her fight to Holly Holm. Back then, it was feared Rousey may have broken her jaw, but the true details of her injuries were later revealed.

While the former UFC bantamweight champion hadn’t technically broken her jaw, an interview with ESPN Magazine revealed her teeth were left in bits. This made her unable to even eat an apple for six months.

According to an article by SportsJOE, a website by the name of People.com got a sneak peek at the interview. The interview spoke in detail about Rousey’s injury. It read, “The stitches in her lip still dissolving, and a few of her teeth still unstable from Holm’s fight-ending kick to the face.”

The article further stated, “It might be three to six months before I can eat an apple, let alone take an impact.

In round 1, Holm came out with her boxing stance and did very well in managing the distance. As expected, Rousey tried her best to initiate clinch attempts to take the fight to the ground. However, these attempts led to nothing. At the end of the round, the former 135-pound UFC champion was left bloodied.

Holm’s stick and move strategy paid dividends in the second round too. Rousey seemed frustrated by her inability to initiate the clinch and get a takedown. After eating a straight left, Rousey stumbled. While she was rising to get back up, Holm landed a kick, which knocked Rousey out.
