Lee Haney recently spoke about his opinions on Brandon Curry’s winning chances, and also Dorian Yates in a recent video. In the video, the athlete also discusses the recent state of the sport as compared to his era.

Together with Ronnie Coleman, Lee Haney holds the record for the most Mr. Olympia titles (8) ever won. He had a prosperous career that lasted from the end of the 1970s to the beginning of the 1990s. Haney was able to secure his eight victories in a row, just like Coleman did. Haney has been on stage with well-known bodybuilders including Rich Gaspari, Shawn Ray, and Lee Labrada.

Despite putting down his posing trunks, Lee Haney continues to be a significant figure in the sport. He formerly dominated the Men’s Open division.

The Mr. Olympia competition this year is going to be a memorable occasion. Big Ramy, who has won the championship twice, is determined to retain it. He appears to be making great progress in achieving that objective based on the upgrades to his body. Haney, though, isn’t prepared to dismiss Brandon Curry, who won the coveted Mr. Olympia championship title back in 2019.

Upon reflecting on Curry’s chances of winning the competition, Haney states, “I like Brandon Curry. I like Brandon. I like the way he tapers and so forth. We talked. I would like to see a little bit more muscle separation.”

Haney also gives an insight into how he thinks the sport has developed over the year. Unlike before, modern bodybuilders have different goals. The competition has become more commercialized. According to Haney, being a professional wasn’t a “cakewalk” as it is in the bodybuilding industry now. In his terms, “The magic and the mystique — I think it’s been a bit lost….”

Haney misses Joe Weider

Having been a key member of the organization for many years, the retired bodybuilder expressed how he misses the presence of Joe Weider, the creator of Mr. Olympia. He further continues, “Joe would bring all the Olympias together. I will never forget that big picture we took together. You know, Arnold [Schwarzenegger] and everybody’s there — that hasn’t happened since Joe has been gone.”

“To get back to that, I don’t know. I think it’s gotten a bit too commercialized now,” declares Haney.

The sport has undoubtedly changed significantly since social media’s advent. According to Haney, it will take a lot of work to dethrone Big Ramy later this year, despite favoring traits like muscular maturity and separation.
