There is a common thought among people that it might be too late to begin working out. But with the help of two research studies held 30 years apart, Arnold Schwarzenegger proves his point with a surprising result. The first study was held in 1960 when healthy 20-year-old volunteers participated. During that study, the participants were asked to lie in bed and do nothing for three weeks. And when analyzed the physiological patterns were after three weeks, the results were alarming.

The amount of damage inactivity had done was surreal. Schwarzenegger wrote in his newsletter“The subjects experienced the equivalent of two decades of aging in their blood pressure, resting heart rate, and cardiac output.” The volunteers had just got 20 years older in three weeks. But what happened next?

The volunteers were once again provided with a task. This time they had to exercise consistently for two months, as scheduled by the researchers. Did the new activity reverse the damage? Yes, it did. The eight weeks of regular exercise “reversed all of the damage of the bed rest.” The study shows, even if one has been irregular in his schedule, or even got strayed from the fitness journey, there is always scope for a comeback. However, the story didn’t end there. The same volunteers were once again asked to participate in a similar study, but 30 years later.

The then 20-year-olds had become 50-year-olds when they were called back for the study. The dimensions had changed; health had changed; their resistance had changed. Indeed, they would react differently to the study now. However, in the study, they were asked to do six months of moderately intense workout sessions. What were the observations now?

Just like before, their bodies have had a positive and healthy effect. This time, they improved their blood pressure, resting heart rate, and most interestingly, “their aerobic capacity returned to their 20-year-old levels.” No matter how long they were out of the game when they began a consistent training practice, it helped them improve tremendously. Further, Arnold shared the lesson of the studies. He wrote, “You can’t change what happened in the past, but you can reshape your future. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been out of the game or whether you have a setback. If you get started and stick to the plan, your health will improve.”
