The congenital disease with which Lee Haney won eight Olympia titles
While talking with MD, Ron asked Lee about his congenital kidney disease. Lee replied, “Well, you know Ron, a good thing, I am not suffering from it. I am not sick, I am not taking medications, that kind of deal. You know, I found out that I was born with something called Polycystic Kidney Disease.” As stated, PKD is a congenital disease that gradually causes the kidney to enlarge and lose function over time.

Lee Haney reveals he has known about this disease for ‘over 20 years now‘. However, that still doesn’t count till the day he was competing. Henceforth, it can be said that he remained unknown about the disease throughout his career. Here’s why. Lee said, “I found blood in my urine.” But if he has had PKD since his childhood, why didn’t he have any issues throughout his career? Well, Haney was too lucky about that, as his habits were like that they naturally dealt with his kidney disease. “As I studied the nutritional part of it and maintain good functionality, it said that number one, stay away from red meats, which I never used in my diet, I was always a chicken and egg and fish guy,” Lee said. He continued, “Then it says uh blended fruits and vegetables, well sweet potato, spinach and you know it’s always been my main state when I train for competitions, then it says, stay away from alcohol, well guess what? I never drank alcohol. So I never had a situation concerning that. Then it talks about regular exercise and so I did all of those things.”
Despite all this, Haney became one of the best in bodybuilding and was also one of the youngest bodybuilders to win Mr. Olympia titles.
