While the legend has reigned over Mr. Olympia for several years, he has also suffered severe health issues. Throughout his bodybuilding career, Ronnie has had multiple surgeries and recovery periods. But one of his health scares, which probably still haunts him, is the one he had before Mr. Olympia in 2001.

Ronnie Coleman made some career-changing decisions
Back in 2001, at the Mr. Olympia backstage, Ronnie was busy applying his pro-tan when suddenly, darkness shrouded him. The legend fainted due to exhaustion right before the championship. He recalled how he did not have the energy to get up from his bed the next day.

Bodybuilders are not supposed to drink water or hydrate before the competition in order to keep the muscle definition intact. However, Ronnie ended up drinking a gallon of water in the morning. The champion had to drink a gallon of water to get out of bed. This incident rang alarm bells in his head. He recounted how he felt really sick and exhausted after he had fainted. He shuddered, “I almost died at the Olympia that year”.

After getting dangerously close to the edge, the legend decided not to participate in more than one championship at a time. At that time, he was busy preparing for Arnold Classic and Mr. Olympia, which eventually exhausted his body.
How did Ronnie tone down after his health scare?
The champion avoided participating in the Arnold Classic to keep his body potential in check. While he would frequent Mr. Olympia, winning eight titles in a row, he also took special care to not over-exert himself. During the interview, he justified his decision, saying that the human body could only take so much stress. It wasn’t a machine after all.
