The disease made Bumstead rethink and pushed him into a mental state where he was “going through the motions“. Bumstead said he used to question himself, “if I should even be doing this to myself? If I should give up.”
Bumstead added, “He (Doctor) determined from the biopsy, I have a rare form of IgA disease which is an immune system. So potentially my immune system was kind of attacking itself. And we figured out that’s what happened four years ago or whatever. And it can flare up kind of any time in your life.”

Bumstead opted to treat himself thoroughly after the competition as the medicines would have contradicted his preparation for the competition.
