“350–400 Grams of Protein a Day”: 4x Mr. Olympia Reveals Extreme 6000 Calorie Diet

Former IFBB pro, Jay Cutler dethroned the reigning champion, Ronnie Coleman in 2006 and won 3 more Mr. Olympia titles consecutively. Thus, the variables that steered his career to the apex are often pondered upon in the fitness community. Recently, the bodybuilder discussed the facets of his success surrounding the fierce diets comprising ghastly portions of nutrition. 

Talking to Fitness Volt at the Arnold Classic 2023, Cutler opened up about the grim details of his bodybuilding diet, confirming that  he consumed thousands of calories per day. To power up his beast mode, required him to consume hefty meals. Even his protein and carbs consumptions were inordinate. Here’s the champion’s diet.

According to the sources, the 49-year-old athlete shed light on the intense diets he followed to build the ripped physique the world revered all these years. We always followed a higher protein diet…” he said. Cutler claimed to devour 350-400 grams of protein and over 500-1000 grams of carbohydrates daily. Hence, the 5’9” star stated, “I was eating… 350-400 grams of protein a day… I’d have 20 egg whites for breakfast. An average sized meal would be 12-16 ounces of meat.”

Furthermore, Cutler justified the intakes by adding that the continual meals were an obligation to his build. “As I built more muscle, I needed to eat more, so by the end, when I was winning my final Olympia, I won four; retired in 2013. I mean, I was eating 6,000 calories a day, a lot of days, which is a lot,” he declared.

Besides that, the icon also shared that he was voluntarily eating up to eight times a day which included around four pounds of meat, at the peak of his career. Even though he retired from pro competing, fans often tease his return to the industry. However, Cutler seems to be determined not to return. Interestingly, the bodybuilder once advised his followers with a golden rule he embedded in his life.

As per sources, the pro once implied that nutritional intake mustn’t be forced upon oneself. In fact, it should be enjoyed by the consumer. He asserted that “FORCING down food, you hate,” was a probable failing measure. Moreover, he assured that choosing a comfortable diet from the plethora of options shall go a long way rather than imposing one. 

“I see so many people say ‘Jay, I am eating this fish meal although I hate it…’ Just don’t eat that s***,” Cutler said. He also advised that consuming disliked food may chart their road to diet failure and it shall get only more difficult after that.
