8x Mr. Olympia winner, Ronnie Coleman was the reigning champion from 1998 to 2005. With an overall 26 IFBB titles to his name, he was nicknamed as The King. Recently, he disclosed interesting details about one his co-athletes during the ’98 battle. Talking in an interview on YouTube, the former athlete opened up about his pre-Mr. Olympia 1998 encounters involving Flex Wheeler.

Coleman revealed that Wheeler’s probability of winning the title was so high that he had already started reaping the benefits, in addition to an absurd post-workout practice. Guess what that was? Let’s find out.

According to recent discussions posted by the athlete’s official YouTube channel, Ronnie Coleman, he shared anecdotes from the 1998 Mr. Olympia event. He confessed that the world was set on The Sultan of Symmetry grabbing the title that year. Surprisingly, Wheeler himself believed the same.

Coleman admitted, “He was so convinced that he was going to win he would work out and go straight to the strip club.” However, The King was so focussed at the event that he wouldn’t even visit a restaurant, let alone a strip club.

Well, Coleman admirably took the title home that year. Although, Wheeler had already begun signing contracts and deals, as per the interview. He added, “That’s how convinced they were he was going to win, so it was pretty much a far gone conclusion until God had other ideas.” However, it got us wondering how Wheeler must have reacted to Coleman’s victory?

Flex Wheeler shared insights on his unexpected loss.

Talking to Fitness Volt, the 4x Arnold Classic winner once recounted his time at the 1998 Mr. Olympia. He revealed, “Ronnie won Mr. Olympia 1998, and I wasn’t really caring because I was so green.” Implying he got too distracted pre-competing and eventually, the results came on as a shocker.

But I knew I didn’t put everything into it, and I was ashamed of myself. In 98, I was second in the Olympia, and I remember the pressure of being the next in line to win,” Wheeler added. As a matter of fact, he never could get his hands on the ultimate title throughout his career. 

Even though Coleman clawed his way to the title that year, Wheeler is equally regarded among the greats of the sport. Coleman himself honored him to be one of the greatest competitors ever.
