The 2022 Oscars provided fans with some of the best moments to come out of Hollywood. Predictably, the Will Smith-Chris Rock slap incident sent shock waves throughout the globe as fans and netizens took online to meme the hell out of the moment. However, the 2021 Oscars saw fans slating the Academy Awards for their poor show. Even Arnold Schwarzenegger shared his opinions about the show being ‘boring.’

The sensational action star appeared in an interview with Jimmy Kimmel and mentioned various reasons for the poor show. He switched off the show as a reason for getting bored. Because of the pandemic, they shifted the show from the Dolby Theatre to Los Angeles’ Union Station. The Covid-19 pandemic forced the Academy to change the concept of the show. But, their plans went south.

Arnold Schwarzenegger got no time for the Oscars

The whole format of the show changed from start to finish. Attendees had to practice social distancing from each other, while most celebrities attended via video links. There were no musical performances or hosts for the show, and with zero entertainment factor, one could’ve easily guessed the outcome. Thus, Schwarzenegger switched off his TV to do better things.

“I basically just turned it off and I just couldn’t watch it anymore because there was so much talent there on the stage that it was so boring – how could you make this, with all this talent, so boring?” mentioned Arnold, after watching the show. With long speeches and a lagging pace, the lack of oomph saw the show rated as one of the worst. Hence, Arnold’s claims turned out to be true. According to NBC, the show received shoddy ratings.

The 2021 Oscars received the lowest audience of its existence. The numbers plummeted, and it was a first-time experience for the Academy. 

Poor ratings for Oscars 2021

The movie ‘Nomadland’ received the top honors, but only 9.85 million viewers watched the show. In 2020, 23.6 million viewers watched the show, and the ratings dropped to nearly 59%. Recently, award shows have seen a decline in viewership, and the pandemic did not help with it. For a person like Schwarzenegger, it disappointed him to watch the quality of the show drop to such levels.

The impact of the pandemic hit the Oscars hard as Disney Advertising Sales sold out of ad inventory ahead of the show. Several notable brands launched new ads targeting the Oscars and were disappointed with the outcome. Hollywood is about entertainment, and the 2022 show made up for last year’s failure. Will Smith’s slap became a blessing in disguise for the show, although, it was an unsavory incident that got him banned from the Academy of a period of ten years.
