This was what exactly happened to a fellow legend. Former Mr. Olympia Jay Cutler opened up about his moment with Coleman. They both shared a stage back in 2001 and, what ensued is still regarded to be one of the intense rivalries of the sport.
How Ronnie Coleman went from Cutler’s idol to rival
Jay opened up about the 2001 rivalry in a recent episode of his podcast. He chatted with his manager about how his biggest idol turned into his biggest rival. The competition was held in Mandalay Bay and saw Jay’s rise from 8th place to 6th. Cutler would eventually go to finish in second place that year.

Reminiscing about the event, Cutler said, “…when your idol becomes your rival. I’ve often said that quote because I idolized Ronnie Coleman” stating that this was the opportunity “when I got to stand toe-to-toe on US territory…”

The stage was a perfect balance of experience and young energy. Cutler also believed that it was the face-off between Coleman and him that led to the judges taking more notice of him.
Their active rivalry was on till circa 2006. The year ended in Cutler becoming Mr. Olympia while Ronnie announced retirement. But Cutler and his manager also remarked that the rivalry of that level will never happen again.
