Most people have had to deal with cyber attacks in one form or another at some point in their lives. Gymnast Simone Biles faced a similar ordeal when hackers leaked information pertaining to the decorated Olympian’s medical history.

How Simone Biles handles the situation?

In 2016, Biles, among other athletes, made headlines when hackers gained access to WADA’s (World Anti-Doping Agency) database and leaked the medical files of some of the most decorated Olympians.

However, the seven-time Olympic medalist used this as an opportunity to raise awareness regarding ADHD – a neuro-developmental disorder that affects roughly 4% of American adults.

The sport’s national governing body also supported Biles after the incident. USADA CEO Travis T. Tygart released a statement after the incident. The statement read, ‘The athlete has done everything right in adhering to the global rules for obtaining permission to use a needed medication.’

However, the G.O.A.T. rose above the situation and decided to create awareness surrounding the condition. A day after the authorized bodies released the statements, Biles tweeted, “Having ADHD, and taking medicine for it is nothing to be ashamed of nothing that I’m afraid to let people know.”

Disorders can present challenges to one’s daily routine. However, medications can help alleviate the symptoms associated with it. These medications enable one to carry on with their life without having to struggle with the symptoms.

But ADHD comes with a lot of social stigmas. Biles aimed to address them through her tweet. It was an essential move to destigmatize the issues associated with the disorder.

It should have been Biles’ decision to open up about her condition. But following the leak, people came out in her support. Furthermore, most sports bodies and organizations condemned the hackers’ move to divulge confidential information involving some of the biggest names in sports.

After Biles’ decision, other athletes who have been diagnosed with the disorders started opening up about their ordeals.
