Michael Phelps has attained 28 Olympic medals so far in his career and this is a testimony of his genius. All his wins in his entire career have been nothing but legendary. This phenom in the swimming realm has never shied away from voicing his opinions about his mental health though. Him being a harbinger for spearheading mental health recently took precedence over any other aspect of his professional overtures.

In his childhood and as an adult, he has fought multiple battles against mental health crises and has gracefully come out of it. This is the reason why he knows the emotions and importance of saving people suffering from the same concern. In a recent interview, Michael Phelps was seen in an interview where he confessed his priorities and the Olympic gold medal was not the first one.

Michael Phelps comparing his situation then and the current situation expressed, “I thought I was all alone, standing on top of the mountain screaming and no one was listening, and now people are”. He expressed his point of view about normalizing mental health and considered saving a life as more important for him. He stated, “Being able to save a life, for me, is way better than ever winning an Olympic gold medal”. 

He also opened up about what therapy is like, according to the TODAY.com, Michael Phelps compares therapy to cleaning a car window. It means that as soon as one turns on the windshield wipers, the road ahead is absolutely clear. He believes and applies all the steps for mental health that are to be taken for his sons as well.

 Phelps to shield his sons from mental health battles

Phelps and his wife Nicole strongly believe that change starts at home. They will do everything in hand to make their sons feel safe and give them space to share everything and anything they can. They have opted multiple ways for their children to open up about their feelings.

They expressed, “We implemented the ‘lion breath’ with them a couple of years back. The lion breath is basically just a deep breath and you get to roar as loud as you can”. They have also taught their children to address their issues without hurting anyone else’s feelings. It is a very proud moment for him to watch his sons grow like this and address their problems. He hopes for a better tomorrow for his children, acing it as a dad.
