“Stay Strong”: Days After Wedding, Simone Biles Joins Concerned Sports World in Supporting Injured Gymnast Struggling to Walk

In one corner of the world, the undisputed queen of gymnastics Simone Biles reveled in her wedding gala earlier this month. On the other, a budding 14-year-old gymnast suffered a horrific fall. Ava Costa’s parents sighed, “It’s a new reality. A month ago, Ava was training for the Olympics and now any movement we’re celebrating. It’s completely different.“
When Simone Biles heard the tragic news about the young Australian gymnast a few days after her wedding, she and other top gymnasts stepped out to give the little one encouraging words. April 7, 2023, was just another regular day of training for the 14-year-old gymnast. But her fate had a brutal end to her day written over it.

Since the age of 5, Costa has been an avid gymnast. But, on April 7, Costa and her family were dealt a heartbreaking blow when she sustained a spinal injury after falling from a balance beam and landing on her neck. As soon as the news broke, love and support for the athlete poured in from the who’s who of the gymnastics arena. The incident was also addressed by Simone Biles who says in the video, “Hi Ava, It’s Simone Biles. I just wanted to send you a little video to say that I’m thinking about you and I’m keeping you in my prayers. We all love you so much. Stay strong and lean on those around you. Take care and I’m sending you my love.” Biles, wasn’t the only gymnast who sent Ava Costa a touching message.

Everybody united to help the Australian prodigy
Maggie Nichols, a former artistic gymnast, and Shilese Jones, a gold medalist, both sent touching remarks. Nicki Robbins, the owner of Queensland’s Premier Gymnastics, added her voice to the chorus of gymnasts who have expressed their shock and sadness at Costa’s critical spine injury.
At age five, Ava Costa enrolled in gymnastics classes. She was a rising gymnast when she moved from Victoria to Queensland in the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak. After the injury, Costa lost all sensation in her lower body; however, she has recently regained some mobility in her right arm. Her parents, Randi Costa and Dave Costa have full faith in their daughter’s recovery. To aid with the gymnast’s recuperation and spread encouraging words, her family has also founded the Walking with Ava Foundation.
