From ‘No Skateboarding’ signs on the streets of Japan, to making it into the Olympics, the flamboyant sport has certainly come a long way. Japan, the host country of the Tokyo Olympics, dominated the medal tally in all skateboarding events, much to the bewilderment of many people. Now, in yet another record-breaking news, the 14-year-old British-Japanese professional skateboarder, Sky Brown, won her first-ever World Title, and that too in style. With only a year to go before Paris Olympics, she is making a strong case for herself as one of the foremost contenders for gold. Well, at least the fans’ reactions’ to her World Title victory gave everyone a sense of that feeling.

The World Skateboarding Championships recently took place in Sharjah, UAE, and the Park Skateboarding event for women saw a new champion. With a “Sky High” score of 90.83 in her final round, Brown left people mesmerized. Let’s look at all the reactions.

“Women’s skateboarding is the most explosive and the most progressive side of skateboarding, that I’ve ever seen,” said the commentator right after Sky Brown realized what she had achieved after looking at the scoreboard. She bettered her own score of 89.63 in the second round to 90.83 and couldn’t believe it herself. Her reaction to winning the championship, and by that margin, was priceless.

The Twitterati had similar reactions. One of the users made a great analogy of her name and wrote: “Sky high”

Sky Brown previously won the bronze medal at the World Park Skateboarding Championships in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 2019. She followed it up with another bronze, but this time at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. 2020 was also a pivotal year in her life as she won a major sporting award.

Sky Brown, at the mere age of 13, won the Laureus Comeback of the year award ahead of greats like Simone Biles, Tom Daley, and other nominees. The event was hosted by Lindsey Vonn on a virtual platform because of the unreliable nature of the pandemic still. Brown was born in Japan but competes for Great Britain at every championship.

Brown revealed that she chose to represent Great Britain over her birth-country Japan, after receiving reassurances from the former country and getting good treatment for her parents. Belonging to a family of skateboarders, all eyes will be on her performance at the Paris Olympics in 2024. Brown will look to dethrone another Japanese skateboarder Sakura Yosozumi, for the gold medal at Park skateboarding.
