Yesterday, Gretchen Walsh delivered a stellar performance, propelling the Virginia Women’s team to victory in the 800m freestyle relay at the 2024 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships. Her remarkable time of 1:40.23 not only secured the win but also marked the third-fastest swim in this event since 2018.

With Walsh’s exceptional contribution, Virginia Women now proudly hold the title of the second-fastest 800 freestyle relay in the annals of swimming history. Following closely behind, Albiero displayed remarkable strength, clocking an impressive 21.61, setting the stage for an electrifying competition. Brendan Sheehan demonstrated his prowess with a swift swim of 22.27, while Michael Moses and Brian Donald showcased their determination, finishing strong at 22.54 and 22.49, respectively. Her previous best time, recorded at 1:58.12 according to SwimSwam, dates back about four years. At just 21 years old, Walsh expresses a sense of everything falling into place for her. During the Cavalier Invite, where she impressed with a time of 1:52.34 in the 200 IM, Walsh spoke to reporters, stating, “It would be hard to find something that’s going wrong” (Swim Swam). Reflecting on her recent success, Walsh attributes her newfound strength in the weight room and a revitalized mentality towards swimming as key factors contributing to her progress. However, she represents the University of Virginia, a program that also boasts two legendary swimmers.
